How do you care & trim nails for the elderly

First just knowing basic nail care for your elderly Mum or Dad’s nails can prevent further problems. Most common problems range from thick nails, brittleness, split or cracked nails. Also pinched and curved toenails. As well as dryness and redness of hands or feet.

Because as we age our nails growth rate slows down considerably. Then any damage that occurs in fingernails or toenails, will take that much longer to recover. By being aware of how to trim nails for the elderly. You can prevent further damage if they have any their nail disorders

how to trim nails for the elderly

Basic tips on caring for their hands and feet

  • Keep hands and in particular feet clean and dry
  • Check regularly for changes in their nails
  • Be aware which medication can cause nail disorders
  • Regular nail trimming for the elderly is important
  • Also weekly hands and feet massage to promote circulation
  • Daily moisturising is needed if dryness is due to medications
  • Change socks every day and encourage good supportive and fitted footwear
  • Encourage 4 to 6 weeks regular seniors mani’s or pedi’s
  • Recommend a yearly checkup with a Podiatrist

What’s the correct way to trim elderly nails

Preferably when nails are dry try cut them straight across. If nails are extremely thick then try soaking about 10 minutes first. Thick, ingrown, curving nails should always be cut straight across. It can sometimes be easier to do 2 or 3 small trims instead of one big one.

Nail clippers are good for large nails or reasonably healthy nails . Where clippers can be more helpful for difficult or mishaped nails.  If your Mum or Dad aren’t well enough to go out consider a monthly Mobile Manicure or Pedicure

how to trim nails for the elderly

Basic nail disorders for hands and feet

  1. Thick toenails are very common in elderly because as we age our nails thicken. From fungal infections to skin conditions. As well as injuries or tight-fitting shoes are common causes of this nail disorder in the elderly. Trimming thickened nails may need 10 minutes soaking first. Then using your nail clippers by doing 1 – 3 small clips. Always file them straight across
  2. Brittle, Split or Cracked Nails  When toenails thicken they can also tend to become discoloured, brittle and cracked. Applying a good quality or natural moisturiser daily will help.  Also try the occasional hand treatments or foot treatments. With either nail clippers or nippers gently trim and file straight across.
  3. Pincher or Trumpet nails can be caused by fungal infection, skin diseases, medications or mainly arthritic changes. It;s probably a good idea to have a Podiatrist or Nail Techican cut them correctly first. But ideally you need to cut them in the corner with nippers. Then file them straight across here’s how. To maintain every week file the corner of the nail and file straight across
  4. Curvature nails this type of nail disorder it can be caused from genetics, nail trauma or diet. As well as incorrect nail trimming or tight shoes. You need to cut in a straight line, not too short and on a regular basis

What are the 5 basic Manicure Services?

Invalid slider id. Master Slider ID must be a valid number.

Not sure which is the right type of Manicure

There are 5 basic Manicure & Pedicure Services. First is Regular Polish which  includes extras like scrubs & massage. Great idea for Kids Parties or the Elderly. For longer lasting Polish try a Gel Polish Mani. Goes on like regular polish using a UV Gel Lamp then dries in 30 seconds. Ideal for first time Mums or Weddings.

Maybe you want to try the new SNS Nail Polish. Where you dip nails in these little coloured pots, then just air dry your nails. Great tips here on nail colours makes your nails look longer or hands look younger

If you have very weak nails or a heavy nail biter. Fake Acrylic tips or overlays might be for you. Giving you longer, stronger nails & cheaper than Gel Nails. But if you want something little more natural & less toxic. Fake Gel Nail tips or overlays are the better option. Both artificial nail services are perfect for special occasions or can help stop nail biting

1. What’s included in a Basic Regular Manicure & Pedicure?

Filing, cuticles, soaking, foot filing, Massage & Polish. First should be applied a good sticky base coat. Then usually 2 coats of Colour & lastly a quick drying glossy Top Coat.

Unfortunately for some people depending on their lifestyle or job. Regular polish can come off quickly. Here are some great tips for a longer lasting manicure . Otherwise apply a light coat of top coat over nail & tip every few days.

Depending on how long your Mani is it might include a long relaxing Massage.  Or a nourishing mask, like a Collagen Hand Mask. Maybe an Exfoliating Scrub or warm Parrafin Wax treatment

2. How does a Gel Polish Mani work?

Filing, Cuticles, Buffing & Polish. This a basic or express Gel Polish  & is applied similar to regular polish. But is cured under a Gel Led Lamp usually taking 30 seconds to dry. So there is no smudging, chipping or fading.

It can go straight on your bare nails. Or straight over your Acrylics or Gel Nails too. Most Gel Polishes have no hash chemicals in them these days.

As Gel Polish can be a bit drying for your nails you should massage your hands & nails everyday. Lasting 2 or 3 weeks you then should remove the polish. Either professionally or you can do it at home it’s quite easy only take 10-15 mins.Mobile Nail Service Brisbane

3. Is SNS Nail Polish better than Gel?

SNS which stands for Signature Nail System and Gel Polish are both good options. SNS takes a little longer & lasts a little longer. But does cost a little more then a Gel Mani. Just be aware of possible hygiene problems of dipping your nails in the same pots as others. But some people still swear that Gel Polish is better, so it’s really personal choice

So how they do a SNS Manicure is Filing, Cuticles, Buffing, Base Coat, Coloured Dipping Powder & Top Coat

Your nails are first painted with a gel based coat. Then dipped in colour pots a few times. Finally a painted with a top coat sealant and just air-dried. It can give a more natural look & feel to your nails.

4. Are Acrylic Fake nails safe?

Acrylic nails are simply fake nails or tips. It’s ideal for weak nails & bad nail biters. Or if you would just love very long nails or beautiful nail art for that special occasion.  Acrylics are thicker and will last longer than Gel Nails

But long-term use might increase your chances of thinning and weakening your nails. Also you always have to be careful of bacteria or infections

Basic Acrylic Manicure service includes trimming, cuticles, tips glued, Acrylic applied, air-dried & colour. First base primer is painted on. Then tips are glued to your nails. Now the Acrylics is applied like a blob of dough shaped on your nail or tips smoothed out, buffed then air-dried. Lastly regular or gel polish is applied.

Mobile Manicure Service Brisbane

5. Gel Nails is it a more natural Fake Nail?

They do have less toxic chemicals in them and don’t have a strong smell like Acrylics. With a more natural & glossier look.  Your nails will feel thinner and more like real nails. But they do cost more they Acrylics. That being said Gel Nails don’t last quite as long as Acrylics.

So how they applied is similar to your basic Gel Polish Manicu

re. Starting with Filing, Cuticles, Buffing. Then a like Acrylics tips are applied first or Gel applied to the bare nails

Then from a little pot like gooey glue the Gel Polish is applied a few times. Smoothed out & cured under the UV Gel Lamp. Then prepared for your Coloured polish of your choice. So which one is for you?

One of the best moisturising Gloves is Voesh Collagen Gloves. It’s full of Phyto Collagen (this type of Collagen helps with external environment like the Sun and Pollution). As well as Vitamin E and Peppermint. Which also give such great results for ageing hands

Why Collagen is so vital for our skin?

Basically its the stuff that holds our body together It’s made up protein and elastin in your skin, muscles, tendons and bones.  As we age naturally our Collagen production slows down. By increasing your Collagen you help fight wrinkles and fine lines. Also keeps your skin nice, plump and hydrated.

Home Manicure Tip

Which colour will make my hands looks younger?

Home Manicure Tip #3   Stick with orange-based polishes not blue-based

A blue-based polish can draw more attention to your blue veins. As well as the sallowness and aging of your skin. Stick to warm pinks, oranges and red based polishes. This will give your hands a more bright and youthful look.

For Mature hands basically you can’t go wrong with Pearly or Metallic Whites for younger looking hands. Fair skin should go for Pearly or Bright pinks for a fresher look.

For Medium skin Pearly or Bright pinks as well as Orange based reds. For dark skin go for a Poppy Pinks, Neon Oranges or a Mint Green which looks great

Home Manicure Tip #4  Using a moisturising Collagen Hand Mask once a week will leave your hands amazingly soft and silky

How can I make my nails and fingers look slender?

Basically stick with Nude, Beige, Toffee or Caramels. Also matching to your skin tones again will elongate your fingers. So for fair skin you’re Pearly or Pink based nudes or pinks. Medium skins more Yellow based beige, gold or orange. Then for dark skin Mettallic based caramel or brown

But you can’t go wrong with a nice Clear polish or set of French Nails another great look for slender hands.  Stay away from Silver, Grey, Neon and Bright Colours. More tips how to make your nail beds look smaller or larger

Home Manicure Tip #5   If you love your dark colours then leave 3 or 4mm from the side of the nail. This will create a slimmer nail look

What are the best at Home Manicure Tips for short nails?

Oval and Almond shape nails are the best look for slender nails. Keep your nails all one length only. Also push your cuticles back as far as possible.

Using a strengthening Base Coat. Select the right colour from above depending on your skin tone. For a longer lasting home Manicure seal your tips with your Top Coat
